Latest news - 9th March - Draw made in Asia for round 4 of World Cup qualifying. Ten nations qualified for round 4 in Asia and the draw was made today to split the qualifiers into two groups of five.

29th February - The final round of fixtures in round 3 of Asian qualifying were played today and there were goals galore as already qualified Iraq thumped Singapore 7-1 in Group A. Bahrain demolished Indonesia 10-0 in Group E but it wasn't enough to make the next round as Qatar equalised four minutes from time in Iran to get the point they needed to advance. Oman leapfrogged Saudi Arabia in Group D with a 2-0 home win over Thailand, and in Group B it was Lebanon who squeezed through despite defeat in the United Arab Emirates.

15th November - Argentina came from behind to get back to winning ways in Colombia with Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero scoring second half goals in a 2-1 win. Ecuador moved into the automatic qualification places with a 2-0 win over Peru in Quito, while Chile and Venezuela jump up the table with wins over Paraguay and Bolivia respectively.

Australia and Iran advance to the fourth round of Asian World Cup qualifying with wins against Thailand and Indonesia respectively. It's all still to play for in Group B however as South Korea were shocked by Lebanon. With only one round of games left next February, four places have yet to be claimed with Group B, Group D and Group E going down to the wire.

Africa preliminary fixtures have almost been completed and with just one fixture to come today the second round groups are all but decided.

11th November 2011 - Argentina struggled once again in South American World Cup qualifying as they were held 1-1 at home to bottom side Bolivia. Uruguay top the group after Liverpool's Luis Suarez hit all four goals as the two time winners demolished Chile 4-0. In other games Colombia and Venezuela played out a 1-1 draw while Paraguay edged out Ecuador 2-1 in Asuncion.

It's all over bar the shouting in the second qualifying round in the CONCACAF region with all six group winners being decided with a round of matches to spare. The six group winners join the big guns in the third round and it's congratulations to El Salvador, Panama, Guatemala, Canada, Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana. Asian qualifying is really taking shape now and there was joy and pain today as Jordan, Iraq, Japan and Uzbekistan all made it through to the fourth round. But China and 2010 qualifiers North Korea are out after both were beaten by a single goal. Australia could have booked their place in the fourth round with a win today - but the Socceroos inexplicably lost 1-0 to Oman. Africa World Cup qualifying kicked off today with the preliminary round first leg matches getting underway. Liberia are already through after Mauritius withdrew so there are 11 spots left for the group stage.

11th October - South America's second round of games threw up a shock as Venezuela toppled Argentina 1-0 in Puerto la Cruz. A repeat of the 2011 Copa America final saw Paraguay and Uruguay share the honours in Asuncion, while Chile climbed of the bottom of the group table with a 4-2 win over Peru. Colombia kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 win in Bolivia and now all thoughts move to November with two match days to look forward to.

CONCACAF second round qualifying is moving to the business end now and Panama become the first nation to progress to the third round with a 5-1 thumping of Nicaragua in Group C. With only two games left in the second round, there are more nations out of contention than in with a shout of a place with the big names in round three.

Results in from Asia - And Australia have gone five points clear with a 3-0 win over Oman - as Thailand and Saudi Arabia could only share the spoils in Group D. Iran produced the performance of the round with a 6-0 thumping of Bahrain in Group E, while China languish in third place in Group A after a 1-0 home defeat to Iraq. 7th October - South American World Cup qualifiers kick off - And Argentina jumped out of the blocks with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Chile to go top of the South America group table. 2010 World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay also hit four as they breezed past Bolivia 4-2. Peru and Ecuador began their qualifying campaigns with three points with each nation bagging a 2-0 win over Paraguay and Venezuela respectively.

Another round of matches in the CONCACAF region was played today and the second phase is now at the half way point. The five second phase groups are beginning to take shape as the 23 countries fight it out to join the big guns in the third qualifying round.

2nd September - The third round of World Cup qualifying is underway in Asia and the first round of fixtures have been completed in the five groups. South Korea were most impressive, beating Lebanon 6-0.

Japan needed a stoppage time winner to get past North Korea in Group C while Australia narrowly beat Thailand to go top of Group D.

Iran breezed past Indonesia 3-0 in Group E and sit top with a two point lead after 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar played out a 0-0 draw with Bahrain.

29th July - The second round of Asia World Cup qualifying is over and fifteen nations have qualified for the third round and the World Cup draw on Saturday.

There were no major shocks in the second round, although Palestine almost pulled off a memorable victory over Thailand, before an equaliser deep in stoppage time saved the Thai blushes and ensured they advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

There was controversy in Myanmar as the match against Oman was abandoned after 40 minutes due to crowd trouble. The visitors had just gone 2-0 up after a controversial penalty was converted when the crowd turned its anger on the referee. Bottles and rocks were thrown onto the pitch and proceedings were called to a halt as the players and officials ran for cover.

18th July - The first round of qualifiers in North and Central America (CONCACAF) has been completed with five nations qualifying for the second round - taking their place in the World Cup draw at the end of the month. Belize put their problems with FIFA behind them and completed an 8-3 aggregate win over Montserrat to join the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands, St. Lucia and the Bahamas in the second round. All eyes are now on Rio de Janeiro on the 30th July when the next round of fixtures will be decided.

3rd July - The first round of 2014 World Cup qualifying in Asia is over - and there were some extraordinary games to get the competition underway. Laos pulled off the result of the round, beating Cambodia 6-2 after extra time to reverse a 4-2 defeat in the first leg. Their reward in the second round is a two legged tie against the might of China.

Vietnam continued their high scoring start with a huge 7-1 win over Macau. Vietnam striker Le Cong Vinh hit four goals to add to his first leg hat-trick as he takes an early lead in the World Cup qualifiers scoring charts.

History was made in Palestine as the first ever World Cup qualifier was played in the troubled nation. 9000 fans turned out as the hosts held visitors Afghanistan 1-1 to ensure their progress with a 3-1 aggregate win - and a match against Thailand in round 2.

29th June - 2014 World Cup qualifying got underway today in Asia with a full program of first round qualifiers. It's a long way to Brazil from here for the lowest ranked nations in Asia, but that didn't stop 45,000 fans turning up in Kuala Lumpur to see Malaysia beat Chinese Taipei 2-1.

In Ho Chi Min City a crowd of 20,000 saw hosts Vietnam brush Macau aside 6-0.

Timor-Leste have perhaps the hardest task in round 1 Asian World Cup qualifying - they must come back from a 2-1 deficit against Nepal in the second leg, and must also play both games away from home due to a lack of football infrastructure in East Timor.

15th June 2011 - The first match of the 2014 World Cup qualifying process was played today when Montserrat hosted Belize in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. The match was held in Trinidad and Tobago in front of a crowd of just 100 people - and there was no shortage of goals as Belize thumped their hosts 5-2. Belizean striker Deon McCauley became the first player to score in the competition - going on to complete his hat-trick for the visitors.

The second leg of the tie has since been postponed, and Belize have been suspended by FIFA due to 'severe interference' from the Belizean government. If the problems are not resolved and the game cannot be played by July 10th, Belize will be kicked out of the competition.

The 20th FIFA World Cup will be held in Brazil. Matches will be played across 12 host cities with the final set for the famous Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil qualify automatically for the tournament as hosts where they will be joined by 31 teams via the qualifying process.
