2014 World Cup Brazil - Host city Fortaleza

Quick facts about Fortaleza:

Fortaleza is located on the north east coast of Brazil and is the country's 5th largest city.

Fortaleza is a busy tourist centre, with plenty of hotels, tourist resorts and 16 miles of beaches. The city has a busy nightlife, offering a distinct, wild Brazilian flavour. Beach side restaurants (known as barracas) offer local seafood - and don't miss the Ponto dos Ingleses or 'The bridge of the Englishmen' - the English style pier at Iracema beach where dolphins can be spotted in the warm, surrounding waters.

With strong winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean, Fortaleza is a well known water sports hub. The city hosts many international watersports competitions and offers tourists plenty of watersports activities, from wind surfing to scuba diving.

Fortaleza has a sub tropical climate and can become uncomfortably hot and sticky in the Brazilian summer. In the winter months during the 2014 World Cup conditions will be hot, humid and most likely wet. Fortaleza usually receives over 8 inches of rain in July - a relief for the players, as temperatures during the day often reach over 30 degrees Celcius.

Fortaleza World Cup stadium

The Castelao Stadium will be refurbished for the 2014 World Cup. The stadium has a record attendance of over 118,000 but modern all-seater restrictions will see a capacity of just over 66,000 for 2014 World Cup games.

The Pinto Martins International Airport connects Fortaleza to Brazil's major cities and several destinations in Europe. The airport is just 4 miles from the city centre making transfers relatively trouble free with a regular bus service running to downtown Fortaleza.

A huge investment plan has been unveiled by the airport's operators to improve traveller facilities and airport infrastructure before the World Cup.

A new underground Metro system is currently under construction in Fortaleza. It's hoped that the MetroFor will take some of the strain off the poorly maintained road network in the city. The Metro is complemented by a rather uncomfortable, unreliable but cheap bus service that serves the city.
