2014 World Cup Brazil - Host city Recife

Quick facts about Recife:

Recife is a large city on the north-east coast of Brazil. The city is a major port on the Atlantic Ocean and a popular tourist destination. Recife is known as the Brazilian Venice due to its numerous waterways, bridges and small islands.

Recife is an established tourist centre and there are plenty of hotels, bed and breakfasts (known as pousadas) and self catering accommodation. Tourist attractions include the popular Boa Viagem beach in the south of the city, with its busy social scene and buzzing nightlife. As night falls the beach lights up for those wanting to take a night time dip.

Just 40 miles outside Recife is Porto de Galinhas beach. The area is well worth a visit as it is repeatedly awarded the title of the best beach in Brazil. The small beach town is a popular weekend destination for revellers and is famous for its white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, seafood and watersports.

The weather in Recife is warm all year round with temperatures only slightly cooler in winter than in summer. World Cup games will be played in the cooler months of June and July when cool winds from the Atlantic help mitigate average highs of 28 degrees Celcius.

Recife is served by the Guararapes International Airport - also known as Gilberto Freyre International Airport after the well known Brazilian intellectual. The airport is expanding passenger numbers rapidly and connects north-east Brazil with a number of European destinations. The airport complex is located close to Boa Viagem beach - around 6 miles from Recife city centre.

The Recife Metro underground train network is relatively new and modern. The system is still an ongoing project with new lines, routes and stations being added periodically. When the expansion plan are completed, the Recife Metro will become the second largest in Brazil. The whole network has been specifically designed to be easy to navigate and is well connected to the bus network. Passengers can ride both with one ticket.
